Where to look

Walk north-east below the Wealden cliffs and search the freshly washed gravel and clay runnels at low water — bone fragments and the odd Iguanodon tooth wash from the slumped clays onto the open beach.

What fossils look like here

Dinosaur bone is black to dark brown with a spongy, bubbly texture — often mistaken for a worn pebble until you feel how heavy it is. Ammonites usually show as a curved ridge poking out of grey rock. Free identification: Dinosaur Isle at Sandown identifies finds in person and runs guided fossil walks.

Know before you go

Parking

Large pay car park behind Yaverland beach.

Facilities

Café and toilets by the car park; Dinosaur Isle museum a short walk away.

Access

Flat access onto sand; hunt north-east below the Wealden cliffs towards Culver.

Hazards

The dark Wealden cliffs slump and slide after rain — dinosaur bone comes to you on the beach, so stay off the cliffs. Rising tide narrows the beach quickly towards Culver Cliff.
